Chiropractic Basics

The following resources may help you develop a greater understanding of Chiropractic basics. There is much to discover!

  • Aches and pains are warning signs from your body that something isn’t working right.
  • Your brain, spinal cord and nerves control how your body works.
  • Life’s stresses – physical, emotional and chemical – produce a defense posture.
  • Muscles contract, misaligning and locking spinal joints, causing a “pinching” or irritation of the nerves that exit between these joints.
  • Lack of proper nervous system function sets the stage for disease and ill health.
  • A thorough examination, which may include x-rays, helps chiropractors find these subluxations.
  • Applying a precise gentle force to these stuck or misaligned spinal joints helps restore normal position and remove nerve stress, helping your body to start its natural healing process.

What is a subluxation?
A spinal subluxation is a vertebra that is out of alignment and locked up, interfering with normal communications between your brain and your body. A subluxation typically is a stress response. Muscles go into spasm. Spinal bones lock up. The adjacent nerves exiting the spine are “pinched”. This results in poor communication along your nervous system thereby interfering with the normal function of your body.
Distorted nerve communications can be an underlying cause of many health problems including headaches, neck and back pain. Other health conditions can also be caused by subluxations since your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system in your body. For example, if you interfere with the nerve impulses going to your stomach, you can develop stomach problems. These nerve impulses travel through your spine, so having a spine free of vertebral subluxation is essential for optimum health.
Only a chiropractic examination can detect subluxations. Only chiropractic adjustments can reduce their effect on your nervous system and body.

What causes subluxations?
There are three basic causes of subluxations – physical, emotional and chemical. Physical causes are the most obvious and include improper bending and lifting, slips and falls, car accidents, sports injuries and repetitive movements. Emotional causes include stress, anger and fear as they cause the muscles around your neck and back to tighten. Alcohol, drugs, pollution and a poor diet are examples of chemical causes of subluxation.

How can subluxations be corrected?
The primary type of care to reduce a subluxation is a series of Chiropractic adjustments. By applying a gentle, specific and precise force, over time, changes in the position and motion of spinal joints can be made.

How can I tell if I have a subluxation?
Actually, you can have subluxations and not even know it. Like the early stages of tooth decay, subluxations can be present long before any symptoms appear. The results of a thorough Chiropractic examination can show the location and severity of any subluxations you may have.
